Paving a Greener Path: Indonesia’s Long Journey to Zero-Emission Transport

The transition to cleaner transportation is an important part of Indonesia’s efforts to reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly visible, electrification policies continue to evolve, and investments are being directed toward building a new transportation ecosystem. Yet, the journey toward zero-emission transport is not as simple as replacing fossil-fuel-powered vehicles with electric ones. It involves changes in technology, policy, and infrastructure, as well as the lives of people affected by the transformation of the transportation system.

This e-book brings together the work of 15 journalists who participated in the Training and Fellowship on Energy Transition and Clean Road Transportation, organized by the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Indonesia in collaboration with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT). The stories document developments and challenges along the path toward cleaner transportation, from policies and technologies to the experiences of people whose lives intersect with these changes. Through a range of reporting perspectives, this collection explores how the transition toward cleaner transportation is unfolding in Indonesia.

Ultimately, this collection offers a record of an ongoing transformation: the ambition to build cleaner transportation, alongside the challenges and issues that come with it. The success of the energy transition depends not only on how quickly new technologies emerge, but also on how these changes are implemented and experienced by the public.
